From full-time courses to evening school: discover how to become a technical draftsman and which jobs are waiting in your area.

You can become a technical draftsman through a full-time day course (such as a graduate or bachelor's degree), an evening course at Syntra or CVO, or a VDAB training. The most in-demand fields are architectural drafting, mechanical/industrial drafting, and CAD drafting. With a certificate or diploma, you increase your chances of a well-paid job in Flanders.
A diploma is not a hard requirement for every employer, but it does open the door to more positions and better pay. In Flanders, there are recognized courses at different levels: graduate programs (professional bachelor) at university colleges, evening courses at Syntra or Centers for Adult Education (CVO), and retraining programs from VDAB. Self-study via online platforms is also an option, although many construction and engineering firms value an official certificate.
Technical draftsmen turn the ideas of engineers and architects into detailed plans. You work with CAD software (Computer-Aided Design) such as AutoCAD, Revit or Inventor, and specialize in construction, mechanics or infrastructure. In Flanders, there is a sustained demand for technical draftsmen, especially in the construction and metal sectors. But how do you start such a training?
Most full-time courses and Syntra courses start in September. Don't wait too long to register, because popular programs fill up quickly.
There are several ways to become a technical draftsman. A full-time day course at a university college (e.g., a graduate program in Architectural Drafting or Industrial Drafting) lasts two to three years and combines theory, practice and internship. That is ideal if you have recently finished secondary school and want a solid foundation. Evening courses at Syntra or CVO are suitable if you work and want to retrain. They last on average two to four years and are strongly practice-oriented. VDAB offers intensive programs lasting from a few months to a year, often free for job seekers. Finally, there are online courses on platforms such as Udemy or LinkedIn Learning to quickly learn specific software, although they do not provide a recognized diploma.
The main specializations are architectural drafting (plans for homes, offices, roads), mechanical/industrial drafting (machine parts, production lines) and electromechanical drafting. Look carefully at the demand in your region on our vacancy page and choose a training that matches the local industry.
After your training, you will be stronger on the job market. Use our unique focus on technical employees to quickly find your first job as a technical draftsman.
